I may have mentioned once, twice, or a thousand times but in case you haven’t heard: I’M GETTING MARRIED!!! January marks the six-month mark and it’s honestly crazy to think that in half a year’s time I will be a wifey!
They aren’t kidding when people tell you “…it’ll be here before you know it!” We opted for a longer engagement – two years – and I’m sure glad we did! I can’t believe some people plan weddings in less than a years’ time cough*Katie*cough. To each their own though, we just knew we weren’t in any real hurry and I really wanted to enjoy the ‘engagement’ stage of our relationship. Not to mention I really love overthinking about things so really why would I deny myself my favourite pastime… I now have plenty of wedding details to second guess and obsess over for an entire two years! LOL!
My beau and I, his name is Chris by the way, have quite the extensive history! We met in Grade 9 and I would say we became good friends rather instantly. We would stay up late talking on the phone about anything and everything. We would write each other silly little notes and fold them in all those fancy ways. (The ‘text’ of the early 00’s lol). We had a couple of classes together, one being Grade 9 Geography where Chris got a detention (his only one ever) because he was joking around with me in class. Neither of us remember exactly how it all started but Chris would always buy me kinder eggs (this is significant). Anyhow we were rolling this little kinder toy car back and forth across our desks and we got into trouble, well mainly Chris, hence the detention.
We never dated in high school but there was a definite connection, however our timing was never right. We lost touch a bit throughout university but would run into each other from time to time, which was always so nice. Finally, in the last year of university we ran into each other at the gym. Chris mentioned that a group of our old high school friends were going to a movie that same night and invited me to tag along. Obviously I did and I am so glad because the rest is history! It is really funny how things work out…
OUR ENGAGEMENT STORY
We lived in Toronto for 7 years and we always enjoyed escaping the craziness of the city and seeking out the calmness of nature. We kept hearing about all these great waterfalls in Hamilton which we so badly wanted to go explore. However, we just never got around to it and it became a little joke whenever people would ask us what we were up to on the weekend, we would joke and say “hiking in Hamilton”. Honestly years passed and we always said we were going to go, but it never worked out. Finally, one day Chris took matters into his own hands and said “I’m taking tomorrow off and we’re going hiking in Hamilton!!!” I was so excited… FINALLY! Chris planned this big hike that would take us the entire day and we would get to see the biggest falls in the area! He packed us a lunch, water and some snacks… one snack in particular, kinder eggs! Long story short, at each and every picturesque location along the way Chris suggested we “sit and have a snack…” It honestly felt like he wanted to “sit and snack” every five minutes and he was really pushing those kinder eggs. It got to the point where I was actually becoming annoyed and remember saying “you have to cool it with the kinder eggs!” (I was so clueless). Anyways the hike was coming to a close, it was July and we were both sweaty and stinky and covered in a combination of sunscreen and bug spray… I was ready to call it a day. Poor determined Chris took one last attempt and suggested we stop for a “final snack and perhaps have a kinder egg“. Being my regular complicated-self I declined and we made our way back to the car and headed home.
Later that night when we were all showered and cleaned up and relaxing on the couch – by this point Chris had given up and the kinder eggs were just lying on the coffee table – I grabbed one. Chris was eating a salad when I quickly unwrapped it and shoved half of it into my mouth. Chris, completely unprepared at this moment and with a mouthful of food (which he started to quickly try and chew), I opened the plastic center to see what my ‘toy’ was… it was strange… it looked just like a rolled up pink ribbon, so I just pulled it and out flung a shiny object. Before I could even comprehend what was happening Chris (food swallowed) was on his knee and my ‘kinder surprise’ was on my finger. At that moment the entire day made so much more sense! Poor Chris was trying to get me to open the kinder egg, which he very meticulously opened, swapped out the toy with the ring and melted chocolate to reseal the egg and rewrapped it carefully without me knowing or catching on. Although his proposal didn’t go according to plan, it couldn’t have been more perfect and more “us”. Chris (the planner) and me (the complicator), just sitting on the couch, no make-up, nothing fancy, just us in our truest form, after an action packed day of outdoor adventuring!
A BIG Thank-you goes out to Josh & Arica from Manifesto Photography for so perfectly capturing Chris and I. Not only are the images STUNNING but they made the entire experience so fun and light! We couldn’t be happier with the final images and we had such a great time taking them! Thank-you x 1000!
